Are There Drawbacks to Owning an Old House?

Old houses, we love them and we hate them!

If you live on the near west side of Madison, (between the Capitol and the Westmorland neighborhood), the houses were built between the early 1900's and about 1945.  That is considered "old" in human-years.  You certainly can't beat the character and charm of an old house, but there can be drawbacks.  Old, drafty windows; "sketchy" foundations; and cracking plaster, to name a few.  And then there's the plumbing! The list could be long.

If you live in an old house, or aspire to, here's a great article on things to think about.  An old house can be wonderful! But it's important to do your research.

It's also wise to engage a good Realtor who is familiar with older homes and the neighborhoods that contain them.  Of course, a good inspector who is familiar with older homes is a bonus, too!
